Marianne Weil sculpture
Photography by Trix Rosen© 2006

Marianne Weil received her B.A. in sculpture from Goddard College, where she apprenticed Italian stone carvers in Barre, Vermont. For 8 years she continued her sculpture training with foundry artisans, learning the ancient traditions of the lost-wax casting process and carving marble in Pietrasanta, Italy. Upon her return to the States she established a sculpture program for The Elizabeth Seeger School in New York’s Tribeca. After receiving her MFA in Sculpture from the School of Visual Arts in 1986, Marianne taught as a visiting artist for the Studio In A School Association in New York City and at the Heckscher and Parrish Art Museums on Long Island. Since 1997 Marianne has taught sculpture and bronze casting at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She currently is a visiting faculty member in sculpture at Haverford College in Haverford, PA.

Marianne has received numerous awards for her abstract bronze sculpture, grants and artist residencies that include a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant, Hospitalfield Trust and Tyrone Guthrie Centre Fellowships. Most recently she received a 2005-06 New York State Council for the Arts Community Connection Grant for a public art installation in cast bronze for Greenport, New York.

Marianne’s abstract bronze sculptures are created directly in wax, then cast in bronze using the lost-wax casting process. Unlike most sculptors who cast their sculptures in multiples, Weil casts each bronze sculpture uniquely from the original wax, finishing and patinating the bronze sculpture in her studio. Her abstract bronze sculptures are exhibited widely and included in numerous collections both here and abroad. She is represented by Kouros Gallery in New York City & Kouros Sculpture Garden in Ridgefield, CT.
